The Works of Ossian

The Works of Ossian are a cycle of epic poems by Scottish poet James Macpherson, published in the 1760s. Macpherson claimed to have collected these poems from ancient Gaelic sources, and that the narrator, Ossian (Oisín, son of Fionn mac Cumhaill), was the original author. However, consensus is that while Macpherson based the poems on old folk tales, the character of Ossian was his own invention.
